The purpose of this thesis is to present the issue of art looted in times of war. Through a brief
historical review, I will pinpoint the moment when the practice became socially unacceptable.
I will also address the issue with regard to the present, when the questions regarding works of
art located in museums all around the world are being reopened. I will support my literature-
based findings with the presentation of an example of works of art that were removed from
monasteries and churches in Istria during the Second World War by Italians. I will point out
the specificity of this case of alienation and the attempts to restore it to its original state.
