A ship pilot is a qualified and authorized person, generally working in ports and straits. He helps ships at a certain port to enter or depart it. A pilot is a person who gives the shipmaster professional advice on the management of the ship in order to ensure the safety of navigation and is professionally qualified for this. The presence of a pilot on board is clearly indicated by the international maritime signal flag for the letter H. Piloting is the process by which pilots help a ship enter and leave a port through narrow channels with heavy traffic. This task is well performed by trained pilots who are very familiar with the local port where they are employed. That is, they know the wind, the currents, the structure of the seabed and the depth. The paper describes in detail the profession of a ship pilot in the port and all the necessary knowledge they need to perform their profession. We also describe the preparation of the ship for the pilot’s boarding and disembarking, and described how pilots in other countries obtain licenses.
