The first part consists of a short overview of the history of photography and its uses, the concept of the documentary, and the approach to photography when treated as a historical source for architectural history research. Part two deals with photography in Kranj; its history and the formation of photo archives containing documentary photographs of the city and its architectural heritage. Part three is an overview of the architectural development of Kranj based on an analysis and comparison of photographs taken between 1868 and 1999. Used photographs belong to The Gorenjska Museum, The Kranj Regional Office of Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, and the National Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia. The overview is focused on the following areas: Sava embankments, the old city center, Koroška cesta, Vodovodni stolp, Zlato polje, and Planina.
