There is a growing demand for HMF, as it is one of the compounds that is of great importance in the search for alternative energy sources. HMF can be converted into some very important high value chemicals, one of which is levulinic acid, which is used for a variety of purposes, but the conversion of HMF to acid is very low yielding and the production costs are enormous. The aim was to investigate the stability of HMF in different solvents, mainly relevant for its synthesis and to optimise its further conversion, as this would reduce the organic waste in laboratories or industrial production and thus allow a better overall recovery of the by-products. I came to the conclusion that HMF is most stable in water and has the most efficient conversion with the catalyst H-beta zeolite.
