Abstract

Title:Women's collection Yutopia
Abstract:
In my graduate collection, titled Womenswear collection Yutopia, I describe the making of this collection, for which I was inspired by the paradoxical phenomenon of yugonostalgia amongst young people. The starting point of this collection are design and art in Yugoslavia during the 1970's, followed by blankets made by Yugoslavian manufacturers. In the theoretical part of my thesis, I presented the main sources of inspiration for my collection. I first delved into the general social state of Yugoslavia in the 1970s, as well as the characteristics of design, art and everyday wear of that period. I started of by researching on the work of graphic designer Mihajlo Arsovski and the interior of a cafe named »Šestica«, which was made by an architect Igor Emili. I followed by determinating the phenomenon of yugonostalgia; when and how it occurs and also its impact on society. At the end of the theoretical part I also researched upcycling as a form of sustainable design. In the practical part, I showcased the development of my collection. I researched the everyday wear and more importantly, the bell shaped silhuette of the 1970's and how can I achieve it on different parts of the body by using different kinds of pleats. In the following part I studied the blankets themselves; how I can use their defining elements, such as: patterns, double-faced nature and bias tapes, and how they affect the pattern cutting itself. The collection of four realised silhouettes is showcased through collages and technical sketches. At the end there is also a showcase of used materials and colour palette. The finished product is a womenswear collection made for individuals, who are not afraid to express their fascination towards yugonostalgia by wearing bold fashionable clothing. The collection as a whole is documented in a fashion editorial.
