Abstract

Title:SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF PASSENGER TRANSPORT AND THE VIEW OF RESIDENTS OF THE MIREN-KOSTANJEVICA MUNICIPALITY TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
Abstract:
Humans have been driven by their wish to explore the unknown since time immemorial. And in this wish a strong aspiration to discover distant lands stood out. Humans first used their climbing and walking skills to discover new territory. With time, however, humans started using more elaborate means of transportation such as horses, carriages and floating vessels which took them down large river valleys. Today humans travel great distances with the help of a variety of means of transportation. At their disposal they have cars, buses, trains, trams, ships and planes. The commute, unless the human lives in a large metropolitan area with efficient public transport, is usually done by car with an internal combustion engine which consumes large quantities of fossil fuels and releases toxic gases into the atmosphere. If an individual opts for a vacation the usual choice to get there is the airplane which again pollutes. With the wish to preserve nature and take care of future generations humans have redirected their efforts into a development of transportation that is sustainable. This sustainable solution needs to allow humans to keep similar movement habits without endangering nature and future generations. The initial chapters of this master’s thesis contain general information regarding sustainable development and its impact on the mobility of the individual. The emphasis is mainly on the environmental aspect of sustainable development. An analysis of the mobility of the individual then expands on the issue at hand. In the thesis are listed achievements in sustainable growth from the past and sustainable plans for the future. This master’s thesis also includes an analysis and the presentation of a survey which explores the approach to sustainability in the municipality of Miren - Kostanjevica.

Keywords:Sustainable development, mobility of the individual, environment, nature endangerment, fossil fuels, alternative energy sources.
