Abstract

Title:3D scanning for recognition of spatial cutting tool-wear
Abstract:
Monitoring the wear of the cutting tool during the turning is crucial for ensuring the efficiency of the process, the desired quality of the workpiece surface and the mechanical integrity of the tool insert. For the purpose of this master's thesis we have developed a measurement system that measures tool wear in the working space of the turning machine itself, in order to achieve a higher degree of automation. The system is based on the reverse engineering method which represents the reconstruction of in reality existing 3D shape into the digital environment and its analysis. We are specifically measuring flank tool wear, also known as VB parameter. The measurements performed with the developed system, which we also compared with the measurements from the more accurate Alicona InfiniteFocusSL, show good reproducibility. However, it is necessary to optimize the developed measurement system to achieve more accurate values of the VB parameter. It is also necessary to optimize the speed of measurement and the implementation of automatic wear detection algorithms.
