Influence of impregnation procedure, type of montan wax emulsion on retention, penetration and distribution in Norway spruce (Picea abies) wood was investigated. Three different procedures were applied: vacuum-pressure, vacuum and brushing. After wood impregnation microscopic sections were prepared for determination of penetration and distribution of montan wax in wood under the microscope. The results showed that the greatest part of the wax emulsion penetrated in wood in axial direction, while in radial or tangential direction the wax emulsion penetrated trough the upper layer of cells only. Using the vacuum pressure technique, the wax penetrated deeper and the depth of penetration exceeded the average tracheid length. Concentration of wax emulsions did not influence the depth of penetration, butit has a considerable influence on filling of cell lumina with wax.
