Abstract
After the First World War, the border area at the center of the bay of Kvarner, claimed by two conflicting National Councils, advocating for the annexation by the nascent Yugoslav state or the Kingdom of Italy respectively, saw a widespread political ctivism, with pro-Yugoslav women’s associations at the forefront in both Sušak and Fiume. Working from both archival sources and contemporary press, the article aims to trace the activities of the two main associations, namely the Yugoslav Women’s Democratic Association and one drawing on the legacy of the wartime Serbian humanitarianism, later turning into the Circle of Serbian Sisters. While the leadership of the two associations often overlapped and their activities were entangled, it is possible to discern two strands: one with more emancipatory views and political claims, and the other focused on humanitarian work, cultivating a relationship with the central government and the Crown, respectively.

Title:Ženske organizacije u nestabilnom pograničju: slučaj projugoslovenskih udruženja u Sušaku i Rijeci u međuratnom periodu
Abstract:
Slučaj projugoslovenskih ženskih udruženja u Sušaku i Rijeci nudi zanimljiv uvid u isprepletanost političkih, nacionalnih, i socijalnih pitanja u ženskoj istoriji urbane sredine u multikulturalnoj pograničnoj zoni. Pored toga, makar fragmentarne, biografije glavnih akterki dodatno ističu kontinuitete i fluidnost identiteta i lojalnosti.
