In kindergarten, children’s right to be educated in the national language must be taken into consideration, but it is also necessary to wisely and appropriately take into consideration other languages and cultures. In the article, the author presents how the needs of modern society are reflected in the promotion of communicative language skills in the pre-school period. A closer look is taken at the specifics of the cross-border area in Slovene Istria and in the Province of Trieste, where ethnic minorities have been coexisting for centuries and where we are nowadays also witnessing modern migration flows.
