In the 1980s, the language consultant's primary role in the theatre of implementing national language policy and formulating normative language gave way to the creative poetic role, which still predominates. Creative freedom and freedom of expression have increased the instances of using different linguistic varieties on stage. The article discusses social varieties of spoken Slovene, drawing on Toporišič's definition, in contemporary theatre. The research analyses passages of dialogue taken from the three of the most popular theatre performances premiered in central Slovene theatres in the season 2015/16: Faust (director Tomaž Pandur, Slovene National Theatre Drama Ljubljana), Čudežna terapija (Couple Therapy; Tijana Zinajić, Ljubljana City Theatre) and Butnskala (Bangrock; Vito Taufer, Slovene Youth Theatre).
