The bachelor's thesis defines abstract nouns and presents the theory of the structure of meaning of lexemes and types of semantic transferences, established in Slovenian synchronic linguistics. The theoretical findings are examined and supplemented by an empirical analysis of semantic transferences in abstract nouns with the suffix -acija. The results show that semantic abstractness constrains metaphoricity, which is why the meanings of conceptual nouns are primarily transformed by metonymic meaning transfers that concretise the meaning and allow the noun to be used countably. Additionally, the analysis reveals the shortcomings of defining meaning and justifying semantic transfers with semantic components.
