Abstract

Title:Controversy of Pablo Escobar in the Columbian cultural memory
Abstract:
Memory is an important part of our identity and it is in great measure a reconstruction of the past with the help of data, borrowed from the present. Remembering events through media is becoming a key marker of reality as it is about creating specific historical knowledge that shapes the public agenda and influences our emotions. The diploma paper deals with the question of controversial role of Pablo Escobar in the cultural memory of the Columbian society which I will test with the help of the analysis of representation of three, in my opinion, key events from his life, based on the documentary film and autobiographical book. The Columbian society has been stratified since the beginning which is a consequence of different tensions in the country and the shaping of numerous traumas that are still present. Pablo Escobar is known to be the most influential and wealthiest criminal, not just across Columbia but also world-wide. Some saw him as a Robin Hood persona, others labelled him as a criminal because he caused many human tragedies and criminal acts. This creates an ambivalence or controversy that I am investigating in my diploma paper with the help of cultural memory and media representation. The social constructions of Pablo Escobar have not only survived, but increased and strengthened since his death. His character has outgrown into legendary dimension and he has become one of the most famous criminals of all time due to the dimension of his devastation and enormous power.
