Abstract

Title:
Stress - a frequent companion of a professional firefighter : magistrsko delo
Abstract:
The focal point of my master's thesis is the topic of stress with the emphasis on the stress professional firefighters experience at their workplace. Firefighting is considered to be one of the most stressful professions worldwide, as firefighters are often exposed to difficult situations that present strenuous challenges to their ability to carry out their job. The theoretical part includes the definition of stress, reasons for its origin and possible ways to deal with it. I defined workplace stress with the emphasis on professional stress among firefighters. I also presented a model of psychosocial support provided to professional firefighters in terms of expert help from various professional services. I furthermore presented the job of peer support that offers psychological help to rescue teams within individual working organisations. In the empirical part I wanted to discover whether firefighters are aware of possibilities of offering psychological support, but also their opinion on how psychological help is provided within their working organisation. I attained the wanted data by data triangulation, which included questionnaire forms filled in by professional firefighters form all over Slovenia, an interview with the leader of the Fire and Rescue Center Ajdovščina and an interview with the peer support of the Ljubljana Fire brigade whose job is to offer psychological help as part of the professional support to firefighters.
