Abstract

Title:Design and manufacturing of the steering wheel for the Formula Student project
Abstract:
This thesis presents the process of designing and manufacturing a steering wheel for the Formula Student competition. Based on the several design options of the chosen component presented in the thesis, a hollow carbon fibre steering wheel concept is selected. This concept provides high stiffness at low mass, while giving the driver an ergonomic shape and good grip at the same time. A CAD model of the complete steering wheel assembly with electronics and additional components for mounting on the steering column is presented, as well as a model of the mould required for laying down pre-impregnated carbon fibres. A two-part mould is made from aluminium material by a material cutting process, which allows the hollow carbon fibre steering wheel to be produced in two ways: in one piece or from two halves glued together. During the manufacturing process of the steering wheel, the process of gluing the two halves into the final product shows better results. In the case of a steering wheel made in one piece, parts of the carbon fibre remain dry as the resin is transferred to other areas and, as a result, the final product does not meet the stiffness and aesthetic requirements.
