Abstract

Title:Discipline in childhood in relation to regulation of emotions in adulthood and emotional parenting
Abstract:
The objective of the master's thesis was to examine discipline in childhood in relation to the regulation of emotions in adulthood and emotional parenting. As an individual becomes a parent, new challenges arise, and they often also relive old wounds from childhood. A total of 554 parents participated in the survey, of whom 41 (7.4%) were fathers and 513 (92.6%) were mothers. Discipline manners were measured with the The Dimensions of Discipline Inventory; difficulties in emotional processing with the Difficulties in emotion regulation scale – Short form; and emotional parenting with the Emotional parenting questionnaire for mothers and emotional parenting for fathers – version for parents. We discovered that people who were disciplined in a predominantly punitive manner in childhood have more difficulties in emotional regulation in adulthood compared to people who were disciplined in a predominantly non-punitive manner. We confirmed a positive link between difficulties in emotional processing and emotional parenting, and a negative link between the level of punitive discipline in childhood and emotional parenting. We also discovered that mothers take the emotional parenting approach more often than fathers.
