The master's thesis deals with the principle of legality in criminal law, with an emphasis on regulation in the Slovenian criminal system. The introductory part presents a shorter historical development of principle of legality, followed in the centre of the work by the breakdown of the principle into individual sub-principles or elements supported by Slovenian case law, primarily the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia. The following methods of interpreting the legislative text relating to the principle of legality are set out below. The last three chapters, however, are devoted to addressing the principle of legality in European, International and Common Law legal regimes. The placement of the principle is presented in European sources of law, in particular the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights, and to this end some of the judgments given by the European Court of Human Rights are also addressed. The comparison with the International and Common Law legal systems is intended to find similarities and differences in the characteristics of the principle between the three legal regimes mentioned above.
