Abstract

Title:
Teaching EU contents in elementary school
Abstract:
The main purpose of the master's thesis was to find out to what extent and in which way the contents of the European Union are taught in elementary school. In the theoretical part we presented a historical overview of the European dimension in education, we defined the citizenship and homeland education and ethics as well as intercultural education and we described traditional and modern approaches to teaching, noting that state institutions and teaching profession are actively trying to include more European Union contents into teaching. In the research part we presented the findings of the research on civic education in the European Union. We analysed the history and homeland and civic education curricula and realised that they both include goals and content on the European Union and citizenship education. The following is an example of a lesson on Slovenia on the European Path and a reflection on the implementation of the lesson in which we realised that the subjects History, Homeland and Civic and Citizenship culture education and Ethics are well interdisciplinary connected and enable the inclusion of the contents of European Union in teaching. In the empirical part we referred to the results of a survey conducted among the parents of the students who took part in the project Slovenia on the European Path and the analysis of interviews with teachers of History and Homeland and Citizenship culture and Ethics. The main findings of the survey responses of elementary school parents were that only less than a half of them think that Slovenian schools emphasize enough the topic of the independence of Slovenia and that the majority of them know when Slovenia became the member of European Union and which countries are in it. In interviews with teachers we learned that the content about the European Union is included in topics about functioning and organisation of the state but it can be included also into other topics as well. We found out also that the teachers are aware of the importance of learning about these topics already in elementary school during the period when their social value system is built. With this master's thesis we wanted to demonstrate that the inclusion of European Union topics in the elementary school lessons is very important for the formation of the identity of students and in this way preparing them to become active global citizens of the world in the future
