Introduction: Communication is a basic human need and a part of everyday life from birth to death. The imparting of information from one person to another. We can communicate one-way or two-way, consciously or unconsciously and verbally or non-verbally. It is desirable that verbal and non-verbal communication are compatible in any interaction with another human being, even more so in complex and sensitive situations that people experience in a health care institutions. Purpose: To present thesis investigated the importance of consistency between verbal and non-verbal communication in medical tretment of a patient. Methods: In the diploma work we used a descriptive method of work. We reviewed scientific literature in the field of verbal and non-verbal communication in the databases CINAHL, Medline, Wiley Online Library and Research Gate. Using keywords verbal communcation AND non – verbal communication AND communication AND patient AND health care professional we collected literature in Slovenian and Englih language published between years 2012 and 2022 and fully available. The review included 11 units of literature. Results: Many studies provide evidence on the crucial role of communication and especially the consistency between verbal and non-verbal ways of communication. The consistency between the two modes od communication ensures a good foundation for the relationship between the medical staff and the patient. Discussion and conclusion: With thorough and consistent verbal and non-verbal communication, we significantly impact the outcome of hospitalization. It is important that healthcare professionals are aware of this and are constantly educating and improving their communication skills.
