The subject of this master’s thesis is a comparison of two historical novels set in the time of the French Revolution. The two novels are Quatrevingt-treize by Victor Hugo and A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.
The first part of the thesis presents realism as a literary movement in France and England, both authors and the two novels analysed in this thesis, as well as the genre of historical novel and its evolution in France and England.
The second part of the thesis consists of the analysis of four motifs that can be found in both novels. These motifs are the comparison of Gauvain from Quatrevingt-treize and Sydney Carton from A Tale of Two Cities, the power of female characters in both novels, the presentation of opposite sides of the conflict, and surprising connections between characters in the two novels.
