Abstract

Title:The Presence and Treatment of Literary Texts in Primary-School EFL Textbooks
Abstract:
TThe subject of this MA thesis are the literary texts included in EFL textbooks for primary schools and their treatment. Through the last one hundred years, literature has played various roles in language teaching. In the beginning, the goal was to teach students to read literary texts, and now the goal is their communicative competence. The benefits of using literature in EFL classroom include higher motivation, the authenticity of materials, cultural enrichment, language enrichment and personal involvement of students. I analyzed seven EFL textbooks for the 8th grade, and six EFL textbooks for the 9th grade of primary school. The aim of this thesis was to confirm or refute two hypotheses, the first hypothesis being that the textbooks would contain very few or no literary texts at all, and the second hypothesis that the most literary text included in textbooks would be used as a way of teaching the language. The results show that literary texts are still scarcely included in textbooks, and are mainly used as a way of language teaching.
