The topic of this paper addresses waste generated on and by vessels, pollution caused by maritime traffic, and MARPOL rules. The purpose of the paper is to provide a qualitative and quantitative comprehensive review of ship waste generation and to explain how to handle and store waste. The first part describes generated waste in general, waste generated by vessels, and waste generated by the crew. The second part presents environmental consequences and challenges, pollution of ports by ships, and its consequences. Regulations determining the location and quantity of the waste ships may drop are also given. The third part outlines the development of MARPOL and how, when and why it was established, while presenting all of its six annexes. The paper also addresses technical issues of the previously mentioned convention and the pollution by vessels which is not included in MARPOL. In the conclusion, I express my opinion and state my sources. The purpose of the paper is to present types and amount of waste generated by ships while sailing and in the port as well as the quantity of waste generated by the crew, how it is handled and stored, and to compare the amount of waste generated on different types of vessels.
