Abstract

Title:
Witchcraft - woman - the bearer of evil
Abstract:
In my diploma thesis I shall introduce the witchcraft phenomenon of the sixteenth and seventeenth century by means of introducing the reasons for women being accused of witchcraft and considered bearers of evil. The reasons that made European folk of early modern period believe that it is women who should be blamed for acts of witchcraft were the apparent sexual inferiority of women in their relation to men as well as ignorance and fear of female physiognomy and sexuality that came with it. Another reason for witchcraft accusations were birth control and herbal knowledge which were almost exclusively in female domain. I shall conclude the thesis with a description of court proceedings and torture along with statements from three demonological works which I found particularly interesting: Malleus Malleficarum, Demonolatry and Compendium Maleficarum.
