Abstract

Title:Literature in newspaper Glas naroda between 1931 and 1935
Abstract:
Between 1898 and 1924 JSKJ, owned by banker and editor named Fran Sakser, published a Slovenian newsletter called People’s Voice. From its foundation in September 1893 on it was published weekly, then from July 1898 on semiweekly, from December 1901 on three times per week and lastly from Sep 1903 on it was published every day except on Saturdays and holidays. It was printed on 4 or 6 pages. During the time People’s Voice was published, it was run by various editors, Janez T(e)rček being the most important between 1931 and 1935. They strove to help Slovenes that lived in the USA, to encourage them to write literature in Slovene language and most importantly to promote national consciousness of the immigrants. The newsletter contained both Slovene literature as well as foreign literature that had been translated into Slovene. It also contained transatlantic steamship timetables, reports on affairs in Slovenian homeland and abroad, reports on politics etc. Occasionally they also suggested to readers what books, poetry, stories, plays, novels, or scientific papers Slovenian immigrants should read to improve their cultural awareness and general knowledge.
