While serving a prison sentence, convicts are offered a possibility to enrol in an educational programme, which, according to research, provides many positive effects. After completing their prison sentence, the participants of an educational programme find it easier to find a job, improve their interpersonal relationships, their communication, ability of resolving conflicts, etc. - which all helps to ensure that these people do not commit another criminal offense after the end of their detention. Precisely for these reasons, it is important that as many convicts as possible are included in education while serving their prison sentences. However, the data show that many convicts also face learning difficulties. These learning difficulties can have a major impact on the decision to enrol in an educational programme and the very success in education or the successful completion of the educational program, so it is highly important to recognize these difficulties and offer appropriate help to people with these problems.
Through our research, we have identified the presence of the Irlen syndrome among convicts, as this is a syndrome that can (among other things) cause learning difficulties. With the help of Irlen syndrome screening, we detected the presence of the Irlen syndrome in three of the four convicts tested and determined the problems caused by Irlen syndrome. An individual colour of Irlen overlays, which can to some extent eliminate the mentioned problems, has been determined for each of the tested subjects. Using the interview, we also examined the success of the convicts in primary school, the possible presence of learning difficulties, involvement in and desire for education while serving a prison sentence, as well as their views on the effects such education has on life after their sentence is over convicts diagnosed with the Irlen syndrome, the selected Irlen coloured overlays helped to eliminate or reduce the symptoms of Irlen syndrome. We have also found that they assess education while serving a prison sentence an important factor for inclusion in society after serving a prison sentence.
