In the diploma thesis, I was researching whether Lift-the-Flap storybooks motivate preschool children to learn the English language and if I can teach preschool children the names of animals in English with chosen Lift-the-Flap storybooks.
In the theoretical part I described early foreign language teaching and children's motivation for learning the English language. I focussed on storybooks and their importance in teaching English. I added the criteria for choosing the right storybook and described different types of storybooks. At the end of the theoretical part, I examined Lift-the-Flap storybooks. I also added a few examples of Lift-the-Flap storybooks that are appropriate for teaching English at preschool level.
The empirical part contains planning and implementation of activities based on the chosen Lift-the-Flap storybooks. I performed the activities throughout March and April 2021. I planned a test before discussing the storybooks, a test after discussing the storybooks and six lessons in between. I taught one lesson per day. I always read the storybook first and then did different activities with children that are based on listening and naming the animals in English.
At the end, I checked if children learned the chosen animals with the test. I compared the results with the results of the test I used at the beginning. I came to the conclusion that we can teach children English with Lift-the-Flap storybooks and all the children learned all the chosen animals in English. Lift-the-Flap storybooks highly motivated children for learning English.
I realized preschool children really enjoy learning English. With the right motivation and approach, children will be very active and consequently learning English will be more efficient.
