Abstract

Title:
Sexual literacy of Slovene high school students : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Sexual education of youth is an important aspect of education and we don't seem to acknowledge it as such. Youths with proper sexual literacy are more prone to implement the principles of safe sex and are therefore less exposed to sexually transmitted infections. Schools play a big part in creating adolescents’ behaviours, values and relationships and are thus giving us a great opportunity to help them acquire sufficient sexual literacy. Purpose: Our purpose is to get feedback on where high schoolers get information about safe sex, how they act regarding sex and reproductive health, and from whom they would like to get such information. Methods: We used an internet app 1KA to create a questionnaire, forwarded it to high schools in central Slovenian region and invited freshmen to join. There were 245 respondents, but after filtering out unfinished questionnaires we were left with 201 of them. We processed the data in Microsoft Office Excel 16 and IBM SPSS 28. Results: We found that most high schoolers get information regarding safe sex from the internet or peers, less than that from parents, healthcare workers and teachers. Most of the questions were correctly answered at about 60 %. Almost a quarter of high school freshmen are sexually active but only a slight majority of them use protection. Most of the freshmen stated they want sex ed classes held by healthcare workers. Discussion and conclusion: Adolescents currently get little to no sex ed from healthcare workers. Thus, we have an opportunity to improve the quality of curriculum. By linking educational institutions and healthcare workers we could implement an extended curriculum covering sex ed and reproductive health knowledge and help adolescents enter sexuality safely and responsibly.
