Growing Uurbanization has caused changes in the surface rainfall runoff and consequently in used changes in the local or urban water cycle. In addition to the current drainage system, which is unsustainable, climate change caused by human development is an additional reason for the necessary changes in water management. Implementation of nature-based solutions can lead to sustainable urban drainage, and at the same time create environmentally friendly, sustainable and comfortable spaces. Sustainable drainage systems, through their physical and biological processes, affect water purification and allow its reuse or infiltration into the soil. In this context, the urban areas represent a highly man-made system, which is very sensitive to hydrological changes (caused by climate change). In this work, we selected suitable nature-based solutions that can successfully address the challenges of the urban water cycle. A few Slovenian examples of nature-based solutions that were already implemented in the field of urban drainage are presented: green roofs, dry ponds, green parking and permeable concrete. A parking lot case study was used to illustrate the usefulness of nature-based solutions for urban water management.
