Abstract

Title:A Multimodal Analysis of Culture-Specific Elements in the Slovene Subtitled and the German Dubbed Version of the American Crime Drama TV Series Breaking Bad
Abstract:
The master’s thesis discusses the audiovisual translation of culture-specific elements found in the American crime drama television series Breaking Bad and its Slovene subtitled and German dubbed version. The theoretical part presents an outline of audiovisual translation, with subtitling and dubbing discussed in more detail. This part also discusses the issue of translating culture- specific elements and summarizes the translation strategies laid down by Pedersen (2011) and the functions described by Orel Kos (2018/2019). Furthermore, it addresses the issue of manipulation as this topic is especially relevant to audiovisual translation. The analytical part provides relevant information on the Breaking Bad series and its analyzed target versions, describes the working method, and presents the results of a multimodal analysis of situations in which the selected types of culture-specific elements occur, and sets forth the results of a statistical processing of a parallel corpus consisting of 210 units. Some of the most representative, atypical, or complex examples are described and discussed in detail. The main purpose of the thesis is to illustrate and draw attention to the value of culture-specific elements and the difficulty of their translation even in the genre of crime drama television series, which is generally considered as readily translatable.
