Abstract

Title:The attitudes of healthcare students towards breastfeeding of toddlers : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding up to two years of age or beyond as long as mother and child want to do it. The research has shown that mothers report that they feel pressured to have to stop breastfeeding until the child’s first birthday. For this reason we have conducted a survey among the students of healthcare that will soon begin practising their profession about their opinion, and their aquaintance with the regulations. Upon examining the existing research, we have found out that breastfeeding after the first year of age benefits the child and the mother, as long as it pleases both of them, since being a breastfeeding couple they are equal and collaborating parts. Purpose: Research the existing literature about breastfeeding a child that is older than 12 months and present the opinion on the topic of healthcare students at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Ljubljana. Methods: In the thesis we have used the descriptive research method for the theoretical part and the quantitative research method, using a questionnaire, for the empirical part. The questionnaire has been adapted, with the authorisation of the authors, from two foreign questionnaires. The interviewing was carried out online in accordance with The Code of Ethics for Nurses and Nurse Assistants of Slovenia. For the analysis, the statistical programme Rstudio was used. Validity and reliability of the questionnaire was checked with Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Results: We have discovered a strong linear connection among the segments of acceptance, positive attitude and knowledge. Students who have more knowledge are more approving of breastfeeding after the child’s first year and have a more positive attitude towards it. Out of all the study fields, the ones with the most knowledge are the students of midwifery, meanwhile there are no statistically significant differences among the students of other study fields. Discussion and conclusion: Having conducted the survey, we have found out that the more knowledge students have about breastfeeding after the child’s first year, the more approving they are of breastfeeding after the child’s first year. If we want to create the most optimum circumstances for the women that want to breastfeed longer, it is necessary to spread awareness among the students and healthcare workers.
