Abstract

Title:Recognition of post - traumatic stress disorder in paramedics : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Post-traumatic stress disorder is one of the most common psychopathological consequences of exposure to traumatic events. More than 70% of adults worldwide experience a traumatic event once in a lifetime, and 31% experience four or more events. In addition, paramedics retain a variety of risk factors, including acute and chronic stress, which can lead to a variety of disorders and illnesses. In addition, employers also do not use any investigations or methods to monitor the health status of employees in emergency medical care. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to study and compare the articles in which the authors determined the presence of post-traumatic stress disorder and how this disorder manifests itself and to record these findings. Methods: As a method of this thesis we will use a descriptive method with a systematic review of the literature. In this thesis we will use literature that is not older than 10 years. We will search for data in databases such as Medline, CINAHL, Cohrane library and COBISS. The period of the literature used is from 2011 to 2020. Scientific, professional and review articles will be used for the research itself, as well as meta-analyzes available in full text. The key words used to search the literature are stress, workplace, paramedics, posttraumatic stress disorder. Results: Research results show that post-traumatic stress disorder occurs more often in paramedics in general than in the general population, and especially in paramedics with less effective coping styles and more strenuous working conditions. Post-traumatic stress disorder in paramedics is inversely related to some other disorders, such as substance abuse, depression, anxiety. There are a number of risk factors in paramedics that can cause post-traumatic stress disorder in paramedics. Whether a post-traumatic stress disorder occurs in an employee depends on a combination of risk factors and protective factors. These problems are both the cause and the consequence of the traumatic nature of the work of paramedics. Discussion and conclusion: The work of paramedics is specific, mainly because they are exposed to various stressful situations on a daily basis. Due to chronic exposure and the gradual development of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, it develops gradually, but at the same time it does not necessarily have to be expressed by a typical clinical picture. Due to the established high incidence of undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder, active and further research in the field of screening tools is required.
