This paper studies a movement in art, called surrealism. I examined motives and topics addressed by artists, and I also studied Slovene modern legends, used as motives in my own interpretations. I believe that there is a strong connection between the two topics. Representatives of surrealism explored connections between the conscious and the unconscious, and artists tried to combine the world of dreams and the unconscious with everyday life. A similar process is characteristic of folk legends circulating among the society. Everyone knows the story of these legends, yet no one is familiar with their origin. Their topics are varied, ranging from death to supernatural creatures. They may be relevant to the present time, they may relate to only one village, town, or area, or they may be known worldwide. What unites them is their role as a lesson about or a warning against consequences. Legends circulate among people and are spread by word of mouth; they mostly contain supernatural elements, and they may relate to the history of Slovenians. I believe that both fields complement one another well. They represent numerous opportunities for expression in the field of art with modern techniques, such as Photoshop. The resulting works are my own interpretation of the material read and a set of feelings I felt while reading. I tried to "capture" the atmosphere of each contemporary tale. I focused on the use of vivid colors and simple shapes so that the resulting work remains clear and allows free interpretation to the viewer.
