Abstract

Title:Allegorical novel of Franc Veriti The traveller of the wide and narrow path
Abstract:
The master’s thesis concerns itself with Franc Vertiti’s allegorical novel Popotnik široke in vozke poti ali popisovanje, kako se človek spači, v grehih živi, kako se poboljša in Bogu služi written in 1828. Firstly, the thesis introduces the author Franc Veriti (1771–1849), a priest and a writer. He was the author of many religious texts, most of which are saints’ bibliographies. In the center of analysis is Popotnik široke in ozke poti. Various literary historians perceive this novel in different ways; “moral fiction” or “education novel” (Pintar), “religious novel” (Levstik), “religious education novel” (Kmecl), etc., which is why the thesis presents the analysis and interpretations of various literary historians based on various methodologies. The findings of the allegorical novel’s content and form analysis reveal the exemplary nature of the tale and the merits of Veriti’s literary works in the context of the formation of the Slovene national corpus. With the permission of Ljubljana Seminary Library, we are also publishing photographs of some of Veriti’s manuscripts; further publication of photographs is prohibited.
