In the year 1989 there were many changes, that had a major impact on the world and political
systems of that time. At the start of the year it was very hard to believe, that Germany will be
reunified so fast and that the socialist regimees will come crumbling to the ground. The world,
divided in two parts, has already been causing a lot of protests and demonstrations, especially
on the East side. There the living conditions were much harsher, so many residents of GDR
decided to ilegally flee over to the West side. Many succedded, but there were also many
aressted and a lot of people who lost their lives while trying to climb over the Berlin wall. In
the summer of 1989 the number of illegal migrations sharply rose. Germany's neighbouring
countries were good at dealing with the pressure at first, but soon they started to loosen their
control at the borders.
In August 1989 Hungary opened it's borders and the refugees from GDR had a free way to
flee to the West. They mainly wanted to migrate into the FRG and they also had help from the
humanitarian organisations in Austria and Hungary, which organised public transport all the
way to the border with FRG. The protests reached even a higher point in the next months,
which prompted the German politicians to make the German reunification happen as fast as
possible. In November masses of people pushed on the border control points in the Berlin
wall, which forced the guards to give up and open the border. The Berlin wall fell and the
whole Berlin was celebrating while meeting the friends and family they were seperated from
so long ago. In the next months Berlin wall was demolished.
In December 1989 and at the start of the year 1990 many meetings and conferences took
place. The German unification process was discussed there. In March GDR held it's first free
elections in which the parties that were supporting quick reunification of Germany were
selected. After long months of discussion the question of German borders with Poland was
solved in June. In the same month a monetary union between the two Germanies was formed.
October 1990 was choosen as the month of German reunification. Germany held a huge
celebration and the residents marrily waited for two Germanies to merge into one new
Germany. The new Germany also connected itself with NATO and with that the process of
German reunfication was complete.
