Diabetes is a metabolic disease that is becoming more prevalent. We wish to develope an effective drug to make life easier for diabetics. Complexes of zinc and vanadium ions with organic ligands showed a lot of promise in replacing treatment with insulin and synthetic oral antidiabetics, that have many side effects.
Thesis includes two-stage synthesis of methyl 6-(morpholine-4-carbonyl)picolinate, which is, after hydrolysis, suitable for synthesis of complexes with potential antidiabetic properties. I first converted the starting product, methyl 6-(methoxycarbonyl)picolinic acid, to acid chloride. After substitution of the chlorine atom with morpholine, I obtained a product and characterized it with NMR analysis.
