Abstract

Title:Color management in web browsers
Abstract:
Colour management is the systematic management of colour conversions between the colour spaces of the devices used in the colour reproduction process. In simpler terms, it is a system that converts colours into different colour spaces, thus allowing input or output devices to display the same colours. Colour management on the web and in web browsers is important because many services and activities are moving online these days. A lot of shopping is also done online, so it is important that products are displayed in the same colour as they are in real life. Most people are not familiar with colour management and take it for granted that colours are displayed realistically on the web, but this is not so, because colours are still not displayed correctly in some places. In this thesis we will investigate colour management, how colours are displayed in different web browsers, if we can calculate colour differences between colours, etc. Our aim is to find out whether the most used web browsers nowadays are colour managed and whether they display realistic colours. The questionnaire will try to find out whether web browser users are aware that colours are not always displayed correctly on the web. The results showed that the majority of respondents use Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox web browsers. Respondents notice differences between the browsers they use, but these are not related to colours, as more than half of the respondents did not know that colours can be displayed differently in different browsers. More than half of the respondents have also had the experience of receiving a product ordered online in a different colour than the one shown. The majority of respondents also answered that they would keep the wrong colour product as it was not that important to them.
