Poetry is a type of literature that conveys a poet’s thoughts in a concentrated, lyrical arrangement of words. Designing Poetry collections is one of the most difficult tasks for designers, because of the variety of poems and the way they are presented on paper. Design therefore requires a lot of effort and creative thinking from the designer to be able to create an appropriate design solution that will meet the needs of both, the author, and the reader.
The purpose of the diploma thesis was to create a poetry book design, where the written poetry would also be suitably visually presented, i.e. with appropriate usage of type, proper layout of graphic elements and photography or other illustrative elements, to reinforce the message of the poem. The poems in poetry book we have been designing are freeform lyrical, conveying emotions and feelings of the poet. The theme of the poems ranges from love, confessional to socially critical. All poems have in common a darker and more complex way of expression.
We analyzed existing poetry collections with a similar poetry style and graphic design. In designing, we relied on an analysis of the internal and external structure of the written poetry, and the results of an online survey of readers attitudes toward poetry. We started with digital conceptual sketches and then continued to create the appropriate illustrative elements of the poems - photographs. Based on the sketches and analysis of poems, a design solution for the poetry collection has been made and prepared for printing.
