Abstract

Title:Geographical aspects of security infrastructure along the Slovenian-Croatian border
Abstract:
Over the last 20 years, there has been a marked trend around the world in the construction of various security infrastructures along national borders. When building these, states refer primarily to security and the prevention of unwanted illegal border crossings or other negative impacts. In reality, the installation of various security infrastructures along the state borders brings various additional negative impacts. This diploma thesis, with the help of a study of various articles and publications, presents the main negative impacts of the security infrastructures’ construction along borders around the world, and deals in more detail with the security infrastructure along the Slovenian-Croatian border. With the help of a survey, in which 140 respondents from different parts of Slovenia participated and other sources, we came to the conclusion that the construction and installation of security infrastructures along the border has more negative than positive effects. The survey findings showed that 50% of respondents do not support the construction of a border fence, while 31% of respondents support the construction. From the results of the survey, it is also possible to understand that the respondents are much more supportive of a stronger police and military presence along the state border than the installation of security infrastructures. We were also interested in the issue of greater security. The survey showed that 60% of respondents do not have a greater sense of security, and for only 24% it actually represents greater security. With this diploma thesis we wanted to show the negative effects of such state borders, which are rarely mentioned, and at the same time to show the opinion of the population, which did not have the opportunity to decide upon the setting up of the security infrastructures.
