Quality of life is an important aspect throughout our life journey because it impacts how satisfied we are with our own lives, the benefits we are able to gain, our future, etc. People strive more and more to improve the quality of life not only in their personal life but also at their workplace, which is why a big part of our quality of life is also the quality of our working life – and we spend a big part of our everyday life at our workplace.
In my research of the quality of life, I tried to concentrate on as many factors and needs as possible. The guiding principle of my research was Allardt’s concept of the quality of working life, which includes the needs of having, being, loving and security needs. This way I got an insight into different areas of the workplace in Company X and how the employees are satisfied with certain aspects. Satisfaction in the workplace is essential because it affects a number of decisions employees make based on it – whether they will stay at their job or leave, the quality of their work, and how productive they will be in their workplace. We need to realize that the higher the satisfaction of the workers, the higher the quality of their (working) life.
When we perceive dissatisfaction of our employees with certain factors, we should include social workers, whose job in the workplace would be to be there for all the employees when it comes to any kind of trouble, empower them and help with eliminating dissatisfaction.
In the theoretical part of my graduation thesis, I presented the quality and satisfaction with working life. Based on the results I gathered with the empiric, quantitative research on a non-random convenience sample of employees, I came to the conclusion that employees in Company X are overall neither dissatisfied nor satisfied with the quality of their working life. Employees expressed the biggest satisfaction with relations among co-workers and the timetable of working hours, while they are most dissatisfied with their salary and physical working conditions.
