The diploma thesis deals with the topic of prostitution in Slovenia, which is marked as a devious social phenomenon, often overlooked and unexpressed. Prostitutes are marginalized, stigmatized, and condemned by society. Prostitution is decriminalized in Slovenia, meaning that a woman can voluntarily offer sexual services. Pimping, street prostitution and human trafficking are prohibited.
In Slovenian society, prostitution is marked as a form of forced labor, or as work performed by a woman voluntarily (Pajnik, 2008, p. 13). When it comes to forced prostitution, women are victims of physical and psychological violence, or victims of human trafficking. Sexual exploitation is one of the most common forms of human trafficking.
I begin my thesis with a theoretical presentation of prostitution, focusing on female heterosexual prostitution, as the most prevalent form of prostitution in Slovenia. I will present some definitions of prostitution and its various models of explanation. I will continue by presenting the forms of prostitution in Slovenia, the different views on prostitution and the legal forms of regulating prostitution.
The research focuses on the attitudes of female social workers to prostitution working in social work centers in Slovenia. I was interested in the opinion of experts who have encountered voluntary and forced prostitution in their work. The purpose of the empirical analyses is to focus on the role of social work centers in identifying and taking action in prostitution. Throughout my research, I want to find out how social workers think about prostitution. I am particularly interested in whether prostitution can be a free choice for the individual.
Although prostitution is decriminalized in Slovenia, it is also highly stigmatized. The public perception that being a prostitute is contrary to the female image makes it even more difficult for them to conceal their work. It is important that we speak out on the subject of prostitution and human trafficking, since it is part of our society and reality.
