Artificial abortion and other rights related to sexual and reproductive health, especially of women, are considered fundamental human rights worldwide under the auspices of the United Nations. However, these are not guaranteed in all countries around the world, neither in all countries of the European Union. One of the last Member States to have (partially) legalized abortion in 2018 was the Republic of Ireland. In my master's thesis entitled "Catholic Ireland towards Legalizing Abortion: An Analysis of Pre-Referendum Events", I have showed why and how the RCC, its doctrine and Catholic values anchored in Irish collective (religious) memory, compared to other Western European countries, influenced the belated liberalization of the abortion amendment. Searching for answers, I studied historical and political events and analyzed the pre-referendum events to find out that the final outcome of the referendum on the repeal of the Eighth Amendment was influenced by numerous scandals of prominent RCC representatives, as well as a change in the discourse of the election movement, feminist groups. - social networks.
