Abstract

Title:The age of digitalisation and the importance of the printed word in the education process
Abstract:
In the Master’s thesis, we are dealing with the question, why the printed work has an important role in the intentional education of new generation of male and female individuals even in the age of digitalisation. In the introduction, we discuss language and find that it is crucial for the individual’s development, transfer of knowledge and the reproduction of society. This is followed by the study of the issue, which includes knowledge and behaviour of individuals in society. We present two views on knowledge; knowledge, which is a value per se and a part of the individuals’ foundation; and knowledge, which acts as a useful tool and which is considered to be good having, but it is not a part of the individual’s foundation. We find that changes in the field of knowledge conceptualisation are taking place parallel to changes in the main knowledge holders. We show that along with changes in the field of knowledge and its holders, the ways of reading have also changed. We find that in today’s time, readers primarily flip through content instead of practicing in-depth reading. We conclude with the finding that in-depth reading is a crucial element of knowledge acquisition. In order for the reader to develop the skills of in-depth reading, coaching and training are necessary, since only good readers are able to overcome the traps of digital content. In terms of developing reading skills of children, it is therefore crucial to insist on printed text, which will allow them to broaden their vocabulary and develop cognitive abilities, required for the understanding of more complex texts. However, we find that it is also necessary to include digital content in the educational process.
