In this paper are first presented pre-Christian ideas of the twelve days (from 25 December to 6th January), the time of the winter solstice, and the symbolism of water or baptism. There follows a description of the demons that occur in Slovene mythology, specifically the souls of unchristened dead children. Parallels are then sought the demonic creature the karakondžol, which is known in South Slav areas and is active on "unbaptised days".
