Abstract

Title:Testing selected mobile applications for monitoring forest management and assessment of their usability for forest owners
Abstract:
We tested the usefulness of several mobile applications for private forest owners. We tested MOTI and Comparaison.sylvotheque.ch (CSC) which both use camera. Based on measurements at 30 standing points, we found that there were no statistically significant differences in stand basal area estimates and species composition. MOTI is simpler, faster, and cheaper that CSC for forest inventory. However, CSC, which uses 360° photography, offers a more detailed analysis of the stand. The stand parameters obtained with MOTI were used in the SiWaWa growth simulator, which turned to be a useful tool in forest management planning. We also tested the Timbeter application, which measures log stack volumes by recognizing log faces. Based on a comparison with classical measurement, we conclude that Timbeter is inaccurate for an individual owner when selling small quantities of wood.
