The thesis consists of two parts – theoretical and practical. The theoretical part gives an
overview of illustration and categorizes the practical part accordingly. I researched artists’
books and analysed nine examples, which were useful in developing ideas for my own artists’
book. I also described monotype, a kind of printmaking, which I used for my product.
The practical product of my thesis is an artists’ book titled »Phenomenon theory«. It deals
with visual perception, meaning, nonsense and everything in between, as well as subverting
the expected roles of words and images. The artists' book breaks with the traditional form
with an unconventional style of binding and non-uniform page sizing.
