The concept of ideology is polysemous and problematic, and in everyday practice it is used more or less as a term of reproach. This text offers some very rough historical indicators, and draws attention to the origin of this concept with Destutt de Tracy and to its critical use by Marx. It continues by scrutinizing the concepts of nation and culture, investigating their ideological assumptions, and offering some historical key examples from the Slovenian past that speak against the established cliché about the fundamental connection between Slovenian national identity and culture.
