Abstract

Abstract:
We are saying nothing new if we say that education is important. That it is an important precondition for the acquisition of social power was recognised even by the early feminist authors, such as Mary Wollstonecraft, but sadly the slogan "In knowledge is power" is only partly realised even in a time of mass university education and the entry of women into academia. The data shows that, in spite of the encouraging results in this field, women lag importantly behind their male colleagues when it comes to promotion, holding positions of power, prestige, or the reception of prizes and awards. The paper asks the reasons for this situation and wonders why male domination keeps persisting, which factors influence this and what is the role of academic institutions in preserving this male domination.
