Abstract

Abstract:
The paper summarises the stances of those actively involved in university language policy, the currently valid legislation governing language in higher education institutions and current strivings to internationalise Slovene higher education, which often seem in complete contradiction with the actual legislative and material possibilities. Nevertheless, the author considers how a compromise might be found and Slovene higher education opened up, without encroaching on the status of Slovene as both the official language and the language of instruction, as determined by the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia.
