In the diploma thesis we discuss the topic of safety in the ship's engine room (hereinafter ER), as it is empirically proven that the best form of accident prevention is knowledge or prior knowledge of potentially risky situations and their indicators.
The purpose of this diploma thesis is to present the unpredictable environment of modern ER, to list some passive and active measures taken to establish the highest possible level of safety, and to list some very dangerous situations typical of the ER environment. The three most risky situations are also addressed with the help of MAIB reports, namely from a cause-and-effect point of view; emphasis is placed on the technical side of the accident and the findings of experts in maritime accident investigations.
In the diploma thesis we discuss in more detail the following three concrete risk situations in the ER:
⠒ explosion in the engine block,
⠒ electric shock,
⠒ fire.
