The article examines one aspect of inner life as it reveals itself with the form of base free word combinations of the type biti pri sebi (to be conscious), iti vase (to retreat inside oneself), biti iz sebe (to be upset). These idioms show that one can experience oneself as other, even different, and they are the language realisation of the conceptual "divided personality metaphor" (Lakoff 1996). The question is whether a predictable connection can be established between the spatial relations expressed by input meanings and output phraseological meanings within the semantic field of "the physical and mental state of a person". The findings confirm a predictable connection between inappropriate/incorrect spatial relations and meanings connected with extreme mental states.
